As we hurdle towards the winter solstice, the darkness seems to be unending! Seasonal depression is real. Luckily, us ice fishermen have a cure for that. We wait all year for subzero temps, snow, and ICE! Because to us there’s nothing better than heading out on the lake when every other (sane) person is warm and cozy by the fireplace.
When it comes to ice fishing products, one feature really sticks out for the rest. Nearly every bait manufacturer makes a GLOW jig. They come in all shapes and sizes, but it seems that glow is the way to go during the winter months. Why is that? Well, as written above, there’s not much light in winter. And I’m not only talking about sunshine, consider what’s below the ice too. With a foot of snow on top of the ice, not much light gets through, leaving the depths of your favorite lakes shrouded in darkness almost all winter. So, a glowing jig is a great attraction to call fish in from a longer distance, or just to simply trigger a strike when they are nearby.
There’s a number of ways to make a jig glow. Most bait manufacturers use some sort of glow paint that covers the tungsten/lead head. This is great, but usually ends up being a dull glow that doesn’t last very long. Enter the Aaron’s Custom Tying Atomic Glow Bug. I source a proprietary material that holds a glow charge for up to 8hrs on a 5min UV charge. And not only does it glow great, but it looks good too. The segmented body is like many other “ice fly” designs, meaning this jig fishes just as good during the day, as it does at night! The pictures do really speak for themselves, check them out today! I have 3 different glow body colors, and several bead head colors to compliment!
Good luck and stay safe this season!
